Business Plans Business plans are a vital aspect to every business venture. Not only are they necessary to raise money, but business plans also communicate the company’s strategy, assuring that employees and owners have the same vision and direction for the company; they give you a standard of evaluation, allowing investors and owners to have the same criteria to measure the company’s progress; and they also set a plan for spending financial, personnel, and equipment resources, which will help you allocate the necessary assets to the crucial areas of your business.
But a good business plan is not enough to make your business succeed. Every business really has two aspects: the business concept or model, which is the idea your company is based on, and the business plan, the way your company implements that concept. We feel that a good concept and a strong business plan are both necessary for you to succeed in today’s market, so before we prepare a business plan for you, or help you write your own, we highly recommend a business concept evaluation. Don has developed a set of criteria for evaluating the strength of a concept that consists of what he refers to as the 18 GEL (Great customers, Easy Sales, and Long life) factors. These criteria have been developed slowly, during the 20 years of Don’s experience, by observing which business concepts turned into winners and why. This evaluation is a vital step in a business plan, because a well written business plan, no matter how good, will not compensate for a poor concept. Fortunately, most poor concepts can be tweaked to become winning concepts, but with each change in your concept, you will need a new business plan. That is why a business concept evaluation is an important first step. The goal of this evaluation is not to give your concept a score, but rather to show strengths and weak points and to help you create the strongest concept possible.
Prices for business plans vary depending on your business, but typically they cost between $2,000 and $6,000. Five free hours of consultation accompany every business plan. The Business Model/Concept Evaluation using GEL Factors costs $1,200.

Most businesses write plans to submit to investors to try to raise money. This can often be a difficult task for owners since many investors receive countless requests for money each year and an eye catching business plan will be the only way to even get a second thought from investors. Don has learned many of the ways to get investors’ attention from the opening line of your plan. He has recently written a new book called Perfect Phrases for Business Plans and Business Proposals (McGraw Hill, 2005). Click here to buy it or to get more information.
